Luz Wavelabs, a startup collaborator within the 5TONIC co-creation laboratory, has completed the proof of concept of its pure/TMtechnology – and demonstrated it is able to provide actual optical fiber bandwidth in wireless communications.
pure/ technology is a flexible and scalable optoelectronic technology able to generate carrier frequencies in the range 50 to 1000 GHz with bandwidths of 40 Gbps per carrier. Due to its unique optoelectronic nature, this technology can transfer the modulation capabilities and advances of optical communications to wireless communications, giving great potential for scalability at a reduced Cost of Ownership.
The bandwidth and carrier frequency flexibility of pure/ will also hold great potential for point to point applications such as Fixed Wireless Access, and for next generation high bandwidth infrastructure in developing countries, where wireless is preferred over optical fiber installations. Moreover, the carrier frequency could be dynamically selected to choose the appropriate frequency range in terms of available licensing and specific climatology.
The proof of concept demonstrated a usable analog bandwidth of 70 GHz over a carrier of 80 GHz, measured to great accuracy on the Rohde & Schwarz R&S FSW85 high-end signal and spectrum analyzer. In the months ahead, the work will continue towards the next stage – demonstrating a communication link with 40 Gbps PAM-4 data. Luz Wavelabs is also working on a version of the product integrated into a Photonic Chip, that would pave the way to provide small, lower-cost, modules with pure/ technology within the next 5 years for medium and high volume markets.
Rohde & Schwarz’s well-established family of FSW high-end signal and spectrum analyzers were provided for this trial and used for measurements in a variety of applications – including wireless communications device testing for 5G and Wi-Fi, radar analysis in the automotive and A&D sectors and in satellite system testing. The signal and spectrum analyzers are also used to characterize RF components such as power amplifiers.
The new R&S FSW features up to 10 dB lower phase noise compared with the previous models, which is extremely important in applications such as troubleshooting the modulation of 5G signals in the microwave range.
About Luz Wavelabs
Luz WaveLabs is a company focused on bringing to the market a new and exciting technology: millimeter and Terahertz (THz) waves. The technology developed at Luz Wavelabs will allow next generation high data rate wireless communications (5G, Smart Cities, Industry 4.0) or new analysis mechanisms for materials and substances, among others. Luz WaveLabs is a spin-off from University Carlos III of Madrid (UC3M) created in 2013 and is involved in a number of projects, with both national and European funding.
